What is Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga?
The dominant sound as you walk into the room is the collective breath as students work at their own pace moving from asana (posture) to asana, following a precise sequence as established by Sri K Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India.
It is a yoga practice that co-ordinates movement with breath (vinyasa),bandhas (internal energy locks) and drishti (gaze points). The practice purifies the body, builds physical strength and flexibility and over time the mind begins to quieten and settle into the practice.
What do the teachers do?
Joyce and Marcos will move quietly from student to student providing individual instructions and adjustments. They will teach you the PrimarySeries, posture by posture.
Who are we?
Joyce is the founder of Find the Balance Ltd. and Marcos is her partner. Both are dedicated ashtanga practitioners with a love of all things yoga that reaches way beyond the physical asana practice. Both make regular trips to India to study with Sharath, grandson of Sri K Pattabhi Jois. Both are fully qualified yoga teachers.
The practice room
The practice room is open from 6.30am – 8.45am on a Monday,Tuesday and Friday morning. We may increase to four or five days a week at some point this year.
The Ashtanga method is intended to be a daily practice. Traditionally we practice every day except for Saturdays, Full Moon days and New Moon days, which occur about twice a month (see Current Moon Cycle on the left) and during menstruation.
We encourage you to commit to three mornings a week.
Ashtanga Beginners Courses with Marcos
An early morning fun introduction to the basic techniques and principles of Ashtanga Yoga. A nice way to build up the confidence to join the Mysore style ashtanga self practice class.
It costs £48 for a four week course that takes place on a Wednesday morning for 60 minutes.
It's a small group, maximum of 14 people on a course; small enough to enjoy personal attention and big enough to benefit from the energy of a group.
